Campaigning for the Restoration of the Stroudwater Navigation and Thames & Severn Canal The Cotswold Canals Trust is a registered charity, number 269721
The Upper Bridge project is located near the western end of the Cotswold Canals. It is on the main entrance to the Upper Mills Industrial Estate at Stonehouse and can be seen from the A419.
The bridge is close to the mid point of the two mile long Ryeford pound and its restoration will enable dredging boats to restore much of this length to full usability. Two other major road bridges nearby have already been completed by Gloucestershire County Council as part of their contribution towards the restoration of the Cotswold Canals.
The Heritage Lottery Funded Phase 1a section runs from just east of Stonehouse to Brimscombe Port, a length of about 6 miles. Work on this £25m project has just started and the whole length should be complete in 3 - 4 years. Access to the rest of the national waterway network depends on the restoration of the 4 mile section between the end of Phase 1a and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal at Saul known as Phase 1b. Several locks have been restored and Pike Bridge rebuilt already and it is expected that the major remaining works in this length will follow on from Phase 1a.
